About Cllr Helen Corner

I am a very positive, enthusiastic individual who enjoys making a difference.

I am a member of Bishops riding club committee, duties for this include attending regular meetings to plan new training initiatives and competitions.

In the past I have volunteered for Barnardo’s working in their Gateshead retail branch.

I am part of BGL CSR team which involves Identifying and agreeing new community partners for us to support. I engage and build relationships with existing partners of BGL and create and drive a culture of supporting the local community through the BGL site strategy as well as devising and organising fundraising events. Some of these include, managing a project with the Joseph Cowen Centre in Newcastle which is a centre for the homeless, I ran a project which involved collecting unwanted items of clothing and toiletries for the winter months. This resulted in 1800 items collected. I helped with a project to re-open Bedes world, a north east visitor centre which included giving my time, painting and gardening ready for the centre reopening. I volunteer for 4 Louis charity creating memory boxes for parents who have suffered from infant loss or miscarriage.

Our CSR team have won awards for giving back to the community in the North East Contact Centre awards 2017 and 2018 I feel very proud to be part of such a great team.

An achievement close to my heart is winning North East Evening Chronicle award for Women of the Year 2017. I won this over hundreds of applicants for my personal charity work, fund raising for St Cuthberts Hospice in Durham. Sadly 3 years ago I lost my mother to Cancer, she spent a short time in the hospice and for me it meant so much she could pass away in such a lovely place.

I believe everyone deserves Hospice end of live care and because of my passion for this, myself, friends and family set about raising money for the hospice. We have done many events, I have ran the Great North Run, danced in Strictly St Cuthberts, played golf, organised many parties to name a few.

Due to this fund raising myself and my brother became hospice heros which is a title usually reserved for only corporate fund raisers. We have currently raised £45 000 and counting…..
